The rise of the right / Gentrification
These are all really current and prominent topics of debate and discussion internationally, due to the mass media and our ever widening, connected globalised societies. Especially considering how modern day politics doesn't just affect the country of origin anymore, but due to our interconnected lifestyles, it hinders on an international scale.
This is best exemplified through Brexit - the UK's decision that will impact on all of the EU countries, or Trump's Muslim ban, which denied the free travel of muslims in and out of America.
The rise in trendy cafes in run down areas at expensive prices, pricing out locals - for example Brick Lane and that area - the Cereal Cafe (4£ for a bowl of cereal). London houses crisis becoming completely unrealistic and unaffordable - rise in age of people moving out of their parents homes - global scale now happening to all capitals due to popular culture sucking people into concentrated cities - lack of spread - urbanisation
Animals and Neo-shamanism
Additionally, Neo-shamanism is a particularly interesting trend that highlights the globalisation of cultures and modern attitudes to religion and spirituality, due to the rise for instance (possibly) of cheap travel and accessibility (trends of 'gap year' etc) = increased knowledge and circulation of cultures outside of previously mainstream religion.
Amongst the youth we have definitely seen a loud liberal attitude returning, similar to that of the hippie movement in the 60s. 2017 has seen worldwide protest reactions to political decisions, as well as a rise in vegetarianism and the culture of veganism amongst celebrities to fulfil a certain sub-culture. Leonardo DiCaprio is an example of a high profile celebrity who works to raise awareness of climate change, influence a mass market and promoting these green changes that is 'trendy' - although a completely positive trend. Additionally, the return of Planet Earth 2 was a huge success, with millions of viewers and David Attenborough being subject to huge social media discussion. All of this may contribute to the rise in people travelling further distances around the world, and the counter-culture that embraces a Neo-Shamanism.
Rise in mental health
- links to the contraception pill recently released
- awareness campaigns to get it taught in schools
- links to ever growing mass media and the fashion industry - all popular culture
- social media outlets promoting an unrealistic perception of beauty
Data
- ever growing technological advances
- trends in learning about outer space - TV shows e.g. Dr Who, Rick and Morty, Star Trek etc. all stimulate a forum
- NASA's discovery of 7 other Earth like planets
The corporate world
- anti-establishment tones returning (like in the 70s punk movement)
